Many young high school senior athletes accept college scholarships without any thought of what they are going to do with the rest of their lives except play a sport(s) while attending school and dreaming of moving on to the next level. I know because I was one of them. It took me almost a full year to realize that I was in college to get an education and earn a degree. I was lucky, many others don't get that insight until their scholarships have run out and their dreams of playing professional sports have crashed and burned. A college degree while not absolutely necessary for success for a  few, is for most of us  a door opener to the professions without which a person is stuck in a sort of economic limbo.  For those without the financial resources to return to school to finish their degree, face for the most part a bleak future of below average earnings.

Fortunately for the athletes at Michigan State University, MSUFPA in conjunction with some prominent alumni and the University has established the George Webster Scholarship Fund in honor of one of Michigan State's greatest football players who died in 2008 of heart disease.  The fund's purpose is to help former athletes who lack the financial resources to return to Michigan State and finished their degree. Recipients go through a thorough screening process and the program has been an overwhelming success since it's establishment. For those of you looking for a meaningful way to give back to your alma mater and help our athletic program at the same time, I can't think of a better way of doing so than making a donation to the George Webster Scholarship Fund.
