"Mickey and I spent our elementary, junior and senior high school years growing up in totally segregated southern communities.(South Carolina, and Texas) As teammates, we always reminded each other of how thankful we were to Michigan State University for giving us an opportunity to be a member of the Spartan family in a very welcoming community. Mickey was simply without question one of the best college football players to ever play the game. The measure of Mickey’s worth was his mind, his heart, his hard work and his commitment to being an honest and a very giving person. Mickey’s heart was always into helping someone. He was very serious about his education, and really embraced being a student. The coaches never had to worry about Mickey's dedication and commitment, and his memory will always be in my heart."
